A new lavish art book, Wood Storms, Wild Canvas, celebrates the iconic works of Godfrey Stephens, the West Coast sculptor, painter and boat builder.
Godfrey’s creations are grounded in the wild Pacific West Coast, reflecting nautical modern and classical influences, as well as the formative influence of his boyhood relationship with Kwakwaka’wakw Master Carver Chief Mungo Martin.
This is the first book to explore his life and work and author Gurdeep Stephens, Godfrey’s niece, selected the works included to represent Godfrey’s vast and varied oeuvre, spanning his long and colourful life of travel and adventure. The book also includes a foreword by Robert Amos, and insight from artists Joe David and Luis Merino.
Wood Storms, Wild Canvas will be available for sale at local independent booksellers, in addition to being available online at woodstormswildcanvas.com. For each copy sold, the publisher will plant one Native tree species locally in BC.
