The Victoria-based non-profit, the Food Eco District (FED) is responding to COVID-19 with a new program, My FED Farm, which provides locals struggling through this time with free start-up garden kits. The program’s goal is to provide 500 homes in the Greater Victoria region with these food garden kits.

Each week, the program will deliver starter gardens throughout Greater Victoria, also providing a food-growing consultation educational resources to ensure each home has the necessary information to build skills and confidence around growing food.

“My sister and I are silversmiths and [used to be] at downtown markets five days a week selling to tourists,” says one garden recipient. “We’ve lost 100% of our income and we are panicking. We support our 82-year-old mother and live together. Having a garden would be a great encouragement to all of us. Seeing something that we’ve grown together would give us such a sign of hope.”

FED is seeking additional financial support to help cover the remaining cost of garden materials to achieve its goal and have officially launched a crowdfunding campaign where individuals and organizations can sponsor individuals, families, or even neighbourhood garden packages.
