Farming in the City

In North Park, an urban farm blooms: the Victoria Edible Nursery grows no‑spray, no‑till starts to support Victoria’s local tables.

It’s the first day of tomato week at The Victoria Edible Nursery at Mason Street Farm, and owner Jesse Brown has been busy restocking flats of Black Krim and Sungold starts. His non-spray, non-GMO, no-till urban farm in North Park, just blocks from City Hall, is both an abundant oasis in the heart of the city and an important champion for the Island’s food security. It grows over 150 types of vegetables, edible perennials and herbs, to eat and to grow. (Its weekly salad greens subscription is a hot commodity.) On this late April day, both the bees and the customers are buzzing, while neat rows of seedlings bask in spring sunshine, a promise of delicious things to come.
