Welcome to Ucluelet’s Edge

Salt‑fresh sea air, First Nation stories and ocean‑front suites—discover Black Rock Resort’s magic on Ucluelet’s Wild Pacific Trail.

An eagle’s kuk-kuk-kuk call carries along the salted sea breeze as you take in the majestic crash and flow of the waves below. The air is crisp and refreshing, a gentle reminder to pause, breathe, and truly arrive. As the rustling red cedar whispers its welcome, you are already beginning to understand this is no ordinary getaway. This is Ucluelet, where nature, community and adventure meet the sea at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Perched at the edge of a dramatic black basalt headland, where the rainforest meets the open Pacific, Black Rock is more than a place to rest your head; it’s a bridge between the raw beauty of Vancouver Island and the heart of the community that calls it home. Just steps from the famed Wild Pacific Trail and immersed in the ancestral territory of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, Ucluelet First Nation, the resort invites guests to connect not only to nature but to the stories, people, and spirit of this wild and welcoming coastal village.

A Place Shaped by Land and Sea

To visit Black Rock is to immerse yourself in a region defined by water, wind, and resilience. Locals live in harmony with the elements here, rooted in the legacy of the fishing industry, shaped by a deep connection to the ocean through surfing, and enriched by a thriving creative community that draws inspiration from the wild beauty of the coast.

The resort’s design pays homage to this relationship, with its wood-and-stone-accented suites, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the ever-present sound of waves crashing below. Each of the 133 contemporary suites feels like a private vantage point into Vancouver Island’s ancient rhythms. Gas fireplaces, rain showers, soaking tubs, and balconies looking over the Pacific allow for moments of reflection between outdoor adventures.

From here, it is just minutes to Ucluelet’s most beloved offerings: the bustling Aquarium that educates and inspires with local sea life, the artisan studios tucked behind cedar fences, and the Wild Pacific Trail, a coastal route created by the community, for the community.

Locally Rooted, Spiritually Restorative

When the sea air has left you windswept and glowing, follow the scent of eucalyptus and seaweed to Drift Spa, Black Rock’s serene wellness sanctuary. Here, the products tell a story, too. Their signature line, Seaflora Skincare, is made from wild, certified organic seaweed hand-harvested right off Vancouver Island’s shores. The treatments are more than indulgent; they are deeply tied to this place, nourishing both body and sense of belonging.

Soak in an oceanfront hot tub, then drift into dinner at Currents Restaurant, where Ucluelet’s bounty is celebrated through thoughtful cuisine and an eye for seasonality. Think locally caught seafood, foraged ingredients, and a wine list that leans into British Columbia’s best. Whether you are dining under the glow of golden hour or spotting a grey whale spout in the distance, meals here are meant to be remembered.

The adjoining Big Beach Lounge and Wave Bar offer cozy nooks to sip and savour with craft cocktails, island distilleries, and views as bold as the spirits poured.

Community as Compass

Black Rock is committed to being more than a guest destination. Their partnerships reflect a deep respect for Ucluelet’s people and place, from sourcing sustainable products like Mint Cleaning (created by two local moms) to offering art, jewelry, and home goods at Forage, their in-house shop that celebrates regional creators. You will find no single-use plastics here, just thoughtful alternatives that speak to their long-standing sustainability goals.

Their newest initiative, in partnership with Veritree, invites guests to be part of ecological restoration: for every night you stay and opt out of room servicing, five kelp plants are added to the Pacific Coast. It is a small choice with lasting ripple effects, one that helps sequester carbon, restore marine biodiversity, and protect the fragile ecosystems that make this coast so extraordinary.

Seasons of Storytelling

Black Rock’s programming follows the rhythms of both nature and community. From artist residencies featuring Indigenous carvers and Ucluelet-based creatives, to participatory events like Truth & Reconciliation Day window displays, Whale Fest, and BC Children’s Hospital fundraising drives, every month brings new chances to engage, reflect, and give back.

To come to Black Rock is to live like a local, even if just for a weekend. It is to walk the same trails the community built with love. To taste food from the same waters that feed the town. To hear stories not just of nature, but of belonging and of what it means to thrive on the edge of the world.

Because in Ucluelet, it is not just about watching the waves — it is about finding your place among them. Black Rock Oceanfront Resort resides within the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ – Ucluelet First Nation traditional territory, of whose ancestral lands we work and play.
